.Spotted Hats
Brian Whittingham

....The welders
....wore spotted hats of many different colours
....crude leather leggings
....aprons
....and soft leather mitts

 
   
 they lit their
cigarettes off
glowing ends of hot electrodes
 
   
 

and would only
consider maintenance
when their cables
started to
smoulder and smoke
    
and when they weren't bevvied
or smoking
joints on top of the legs of the rig
  
they would
artistically

weld pipes
 with bevelled preps
............and tackle "overhead"
...........................with a sureness of skill
  
  
 molten showers of sparks
............ potholing
leathered protection
as they twisted their rods
to the most acute angles
 
  
 
 

they viewed
green glowing arcs
as low hydrogen fumes

  

 

.......n
snaked their way.........o
round spaceman-like masks......i
the slag on the weld..p
curled up like the tail of a scor
